That is different from two things it gets confused with:

When people say «AI made a product video for $30,» they mean the first definition: prompt in, clip out. Fast, cheap, and unpredictable in ways that matter for a brand.

Where AI product video actually works

AI wins where clips are short, quantity beats perfection, and no one is inspecting the surface of the product. That describes a surprising amount of e-commerce content.

Here is where I reach for it on real projects:

  • Social cutdowns (12–30 seconds). Reels, TikTok, Shorts. Fast motion, quick cuts, on-screen text doing most of the selling. A viewer watches for a beat and scrolls. Small imperfections vanish at that speed.
  • A/B creative testing. You need eight versions of the same ad with different hooks, colors and openers to find the one that converts. Generating variants beats re-shooting every idea.
  • Volume and batching. Dozens of clips a day across a wide catalog. When you have 200 SKUs and a two-week deadline, no camera crew or CGI pipeline touches that throughput.
  • Localization. One concept, English and Arabic and whatever else, with AI voiceover and lip-sync. For a Dubai brand running bilingual, this collapses days of re-work into an afternoon.

Where AI product video flops

AI breaks on exactly the things that make a product look expensive and real. If your brand lives on those things, generative video will quietly cost you trust.

None of this is theoretical. I have watched a jewelry client’s watch face grow a second reflection that no photographer would ever allow, and a fashion brand’s signature drape turn to rubber the moment the model prompted movement. How to spot AI artifacts before you publish

Most AI failures show up in the same handful of places. Once you know where to look, a 60-second review catches the clips that will embarrass you.

Run this checklist on every generated clip before it goes anywhere near a paid campaign:

Check What to look for
Hands and fingers Count the fingers. Watch the grip through the whole clip, not one frame. Morphing is worst mid-motion.
Fabric Freeze on a fold. Does the weave hold, or smear? Does drape move like the material weighs something?
Reflections On any shiny surface, do reflections stay consistent, or double and drift as the camera moves?
Logo lock Scrub frame by frame. Does the logo hold its position and shape, or does it slide and warp?
Text Read every word of on-screen text at full speed and paused. Watch for one-frame glitches into nonsense.
Light continuity Play your clips back to back. Does the lighting match across cuts, or does the mood jump?
SKU identity In multi-clip sets, is it visibly the same product every time, same label, cap, color, proportions?

If a clip fails two or more of these, don’t fix it in the edit. Regenerate it, or move that shot to CGI or a camera. Patching AI artifacts in post usually costs more than shooting the thing properly.

The real cost math nobody shows you

The sticker price of AI video is the subscription. The real price is the reroll count, meaning how many generations you burn to get one clean clip, plus the redo work when a flawed clip slips through. On simple products that ratio is low and AI is genuinely cheap. On hard surfaces it climbs fast, and CGI or a shoot becomes the cheaper option.

Here is the way I think about it on a quote:

  • True cost = subscription/credits + reroll time + fixes + review. Not just the monthly fee.
  • Reroll count is everything. A plain product might give you a usable clip in two or three tries. A reflective watch might take twenty, and still not be right. Twenty rerolls of a senior person’s time is no longer cheap.
  • Break-even leans on variety and volume. Many SKUs, many variants, short social clips, forgiving surfaces, and AI wins on unit cost. Few SKUs, one hero moment, premium material, and a real shoot or CGI wins, because you pay once and control everything.

A rough decision line I use: if you need dozens of forgiving clips fast, start with AI. If you need a handful of clips that have to be perfect, don’t, because the reroll lottery will eat the savings and the deadline.

These three are not competitors, they are three tools for three jobs. AI is for volume and speed on forgiving content. CGI is for total control on hard surfaces and impossible camera moves. A real shoot is for authenticity, human moments and brand trust. The trap is using one where another belongs.

Match the tool to what the viewer will scrutinize and how many clips you need.

  • Short social clips, wide catalog, forgiving products: AI. Batch it, test it, localize it.
  • One or a few hero products, premium or reflective: CGI. Perfect light and material, any angle, before the prototype even exists.
  • Human moments, lifestyle, brand story, authenticity: real shoot. A camera and a director still own this.
  • Mixed campaign (most real briefs): hybrid. Hero on CGI or camera, the long tail of social variants on AI, all color-matched in post so they feel like one brand.

Most e-commerce brands I quote land on the hybrid answer. The mistake is treating it as an all-or-nothing choice. It never is.
