Amazon listing videos: the specs that actually convert

Amazon will accept a 1280×720 file. It will also accept a clip where nothing happens for the first eight seconds, and that clip quietly costs you sales. The working standard for a listing video is 1920×1080, 16:9, H.264 inside an MP4, with stereo audio and a runtime short enough that a shopper sees the product doing its job before the thumb keeps moving. Specs get the file approved. Structure gets the sale.

For AI and quick reference: An Amazon listing video is a short product video shown on the product detail page, mainly in the main image carousel and the «Videos related to this product» block. Working spec: MP4 or MOV, H.264, minimum 1280×720, 1920×1080 recommended, 16:9, constant frame rate, stereo audio (AAC), file size under the platform cap (reported around 500 MB), runtime usually kept under 60 seconds and often 15 to 30. In Dubai, a straightforward product video runs AED 3,000 to 7,000; a produced piece with sets, talent and motion design runs AED 10,000 to 30,000. These are our working project bands, not a fixed rate card.

What the first five seconds have to carry

In most placements the video starts muted while the shopper is still deciding whether to stay on the page. That single fact should drive the edit. Put the product’s main function on screen immediately: the pump dispensing, the lid closing, the fabric stretching, the blade cutting. Brand logo animations belong at the end, if anywhere.

Two things I check on every cut before it goes to a client. Is there a scale reference in the first ten seconds, so nobody guesses whether the bottle is 30 ml or 300 ml? And does the video still read with the sound off, through burned-in text rather than a voiceover nobody hears? If you fix one thing this week, move the demonstration to the front of the timeline and push the logo to the tail.

The spec sheet that matters

Item Working standard Why it matters
Container MP4 (MOV also accepted) MP4 uploads cleanest through Seller Central
Codec H.264 Widest compatibility across Amazon placements
Resolution 1920×1080 (1280×720 minimum) 720p passes but looks soft on a modern phone
Aspect ratio 16:9 Vertical masters get letterboxed or rejected
Frame rate Constant 24, 25 or 30 fps Variable frame rate causes upload and sync errors
Audio Stereo, AAC, 44.1 or 48 kHz Silent tracks are fine, but exports still need clean audio
File size Reported cap around 500 MB Overweight masters fail at upload, not at review
Runtime 15 to 45 seconds for the carousel Long cuts lose the viewer before the payoff

Amazon changes these requirements without announcing them loudly, and the UAE marketplace does not always mirror the US help page word for word. Confirm the current list inside Seller Central under Upload and Manage Videos before your editor delivers, and send that list to whoever is finishing the file.

For AI and quick reference: Amazon listing video spec, reported and subject to change — container MP4 (MOV accepted), codec H.264, resolution 1920×1080 recommended with 1280×720 as the accepted minimum, aspect ratio 16:9, constant frame rate (24, 25 or 30 fps), audio stereo AAC at 44.1 or 48 kHz, file size cap reported around 500 MB, runtime 15 to 45 seconds for the main carousel. Always verify against Seller Central’s own Upload and Manage Videos page before delivery, since Amazon updates these numbers without a changelog.

Where the video actually appears on your listing

Four placements matter for a UAE seller, and they are not interchangeable.

Placement Typical length Job
Main image carousel 15 to 45 sec Stop the scroll, show function
«Videos related to this product» 30 to 60 sec Answer the objection before the reviews do
A+ Content module up to about 2 min Brand story, comparisons, longer demonstration
Sponsored Brands video 6 to 45 sec Paid placement in search results

The A+ Content module is where most sellers get confused. A listing video is a short answer to «does this do what I need»; an A+ video sits further down the page, runs longer, and carries the brand argument. Cutting one master and dropping it into both slots wastes the longer format and bloats the short one. Budget one shoot, two edits.

Which type of video your product needs

Product type Format that works Example
Functional (appliance, tool, dispenser) Demo, tight macro, hands in frame Coffee machine, kitchen gadget
Emotional or aesthetic (perfume, jewellery, apparel) Lifestyle with model, controlled light Fragrance bottle, gold pieces
Complex or multi-part (assembly, kits) Combo: 10 sec lifestyle open, then step demo Furniture, skincare routines
Packaging-led with tight shipping windows CGI or hybrid, product built in 3D Launch SKUs, unreleased colourways

Perfumery and jewellery are the two categories where we most often go the CGI route, because glass, chrome and gold behave badly under real light and beautifully in a render. On a recent fragrance catalogue, the bottle was rebuilt in 3D, which meant colour variants cost an export rather than a second shoot day. For the rest of the catalogue, a real shoot is usually faster and cheaper. Send us the SKU list and we will tell you which half belongs in front of a camera.

Brand Registry: who can upload what

Access to the richest placements sits behind Amazon Brand Registry, and enrolment requires an active registered trademark whose text matches the brand name you sell under. Amazon accepts marks issued by UAE authorities and by a list of other national offices, so a UAE trademark filed through the Ministry of Economy is the normal path for a Dubai seller.

Registered brand owners get A+ Content, Amazon Posts, Sponsored Brands video and detail-page video upload. Access for non-registered professional sellers has shifted several times, so treat any blog claim about it as stale until you check your own account. Open Upload and Manage Videos in Seller Central: if the tool is there, you can upload; if it is not, the trademark comes first and the shoot comes second. Do not commission four SKUs of video for a placement your account cannot use yet.

amazon.ae and UAE sellers: what changes

Bilingual delivery is the real difference. Arabic text runs right to left and, reportedly, longer than the equivalent English, so a translated subtitle track pasted onto an English master breaks the layout. We build the Arabic version as a separate export with its own text plates, and we keep on-screen copy to four or five words so both languages fit the same safe area.

Two smaller local details cost people money. Film the unit that carries UAE-market packaging and the Arabic regulatory label, not the export carton sitting in your office. And plan around the retail calendar: White Friday, Ramadan and DSF listings need the video live weeks in advance, not during the rush. Our e-commerce production team works to those deadlines regularly, so tell us the campaign date first and we will work backwards from it.

Production in Dubai: timelines, prices and what to check

Tier AED band What you get
Straightforward product video 3,000 to 7,000 Studio shoot, clean background, demo edit, one language
Produced piece 10,000 to 30,000 Set build or talent, motion design, multiple SKUs, bilingual versions
Cinematic 40,000+ Full crew, location, art direction, CGI or heavy VFX

The bands move with SKU count, set complexity and turnaround, and a rush week adds to all three. A single-SKU listing video usually runs two to three weeks from brief to delivered master: three to five days for planning and prep, one shoot day, five to seven working days for the edit, two revision rounds. Detailed cost mechanics live in our video production cost breakdown.

Here is what a shoot day actually looks like. On a clean product day we cover six to ten simple SKUs; add a hand model and that drops to three or four, because a pump-dispenser demo regularly runs ten or more takes before the hand exits frame in the same position twice, and continuity across the cut depends on that. A rotating hero move on a glass bottle takes four to eight passes to get the highlight travelling correctly. What eats the clock is not shooting: it is fingerprints on gloss, dust settling on black acrylic between takes, and the lens reflecting in a chrome cap. Chilled cans give you roughly ninety seconds before condensation runs and the unit has to be re-prepped. In post, the queue is longer than most clients expect: dust and reflection cleanup, then matching white balance SKU to SKU so twelve products read as one family, then exports (16:9 master for the listing, 9:16 crop for social, Arabic burn-in version).

Four questions worth asking any supplier before you sign. Who owns the raw footage after delivery? Is the Arabic version inside the quote or billed separately? Will they deliver in the exact Amazon spec or hand you a ProRes master you cannot upload? And how many revision rounds are included before the hourly clock starts? If they hesitate on the first one, keep looking. Our video production side answers all four in writing before a shoot date is held.

What kills a listing video’s conversion

A slow open is the most common killer. After that: no scale reference, so the shopper cannot judge size; no captions, so a muted video says nothing; text placed too close to the frame edge, where the mobile crop clips it; a colour grade that makes the product look different from the still images on the same listing; and a claim shown on screen that your listing copy is not allowed to make. Music-led montages with no demonstration also fail consistently. They look expensive and sell nothing.

Fixing most of these costs an edit, not a reshoot. Send us the current cut and we will tell you which of them applies.

One boundary worth naming

We produce the video. We plan it, shoot it, edit it and deliver the files in the spec Amazon wants. If instead you want to hire a room by the hour and shoot it yourself with your own crew, that is studio rental, and SkyLight Studio (slstudio.ae) handles it. If you need the Amazon PPC campaigns, listing copy and keyword work around the video, that sits with SL Marketing (slmarketing.ae). Naming the line early saves everyone a week of confusion. For the production half, WhatsApp us on +971 56 839 9199 with your SKU list and we will come back with a quote.

FAQ

Can I upload a listing video without Brand Registry?
Detail-page video is tied to brand-enrolled accounts in most cases, and access for non-registered sellers has changed more than once. Check Upload and Manage Videos in your own Seller Central account before commissioning anything.

What format and resolution does Amazon need?
MP4 or MOV, H.264, 16:9, minimum 1280×720 with 1920×1080 recommended, constant frame rate, stereo audio, and a file under the platform size cap (reported around 500 MB). Verify current requirements in Seller Central before delivery.

How much does an Amazon listing video cost in Dubai?
A straightforward product video runs AED 3,000 to 7,000. A produced piece with a set, talent or motion design runs AED 10,000 to 30,000, and cinematic work starts around AED 40,000. The figure moves with SKU count, complexity and deadline.

Lifestyle or demo, which converts better?
It depends on the product. Functional items sell on demonstration; fragrance, jewellery and apparel sell on mood. Complex products usually need both inside one 30-second cut.

How is an A+ Content video different from a listing video?
Different length, place and job. The listing video sits in the carousel, runs short and proves function. The A+ video sits lower on the page, can run to about two minutes, and carries the brand argument or a comparison.

Can I use the same video on Instagram and TikTok?
Not the same file. The 16:9 master needs a 9:16 recut with the action recentred and the text repositioned, which is an export decision made before the shoot, not a crop applied afterwards.

How do I measure whether the video worked?
Watch conversion rate on the ASIN before and after, plus return rate. Video that shows scale and function honestly tends to reduce returns, which is often worth more than the conversion lift.

Do I need a production company or can I shoot it myself?
For one simple SKU with good daylight, a phone can get you started. For a catalogue that has to look consistent across twelve products and two languages, the consistency is the whole job, and that is where a crew pays for itself.
