A construction timelapse in Dubai is a fixed camera system installed on or beside a site that shoots one full-resolution frame every 10 to 30 minutes for the entire build, then gets edited into a short film that compresses 24 to 36 months into two or three minutes. The camera stays out there through July rooftop heat, through shamal season, through the day the crane comes down. Nobody stands next to it. That is the whole point, and it is also why the job is closer to running a small unmanned outpost than to booking a shoot day.
What the job actually is, and what it is separate from
Two different products get called «site cameras» in Dubai, and buyers lose weeks confusing them.
Security cameras record continuous low-bitrate video, overwrite themselves every couple of weeks, and exist so somebody can check who was near the gate at 02:00. A timelapse system shoots stills at a fixed interval, keeps every frame at full resolution for the life of the project, and is colour-managed so that a frame from month 3 and a frame from month 29 can sit next to each other in the same edit without a visible jump. Different sensors, different lenses, different storage logic, different reason for existing.
The second confusion is about who owns the hardware. There are three routes, and the honest comparison looks like this:

Buying makes sense for a contractor with ten concurrent sites and an internal media team. For a single tower, the equipment cost is the small part of the problem. The expensive part is the 30 months of somebody being responsible.

One boundary worth naming

From the first site walk to the finished film
The install is the shortest part of the project and the one that decides everything else.
Site walk. The mount point has to survive the build. A camera aimed at an excavation looks perfect in month one and useless in month fourteen, when the superstructure has grown past the top of the frame. We frame for the finished building’s height and accept that the first months will have a lot of sky in the shot. Sun path matters too: a west-facing position eats direct afternoon sun for half the year and produces flare in every frame from 15:00 onwards.
Candidate positions are usually the roof or upper floor of a completed building nearby, a mast on the site perimeter, or a neighbouring plot’s boundary structure. Tower cranes look tempting and are almost always wrong, because they move, they vibrate, and they get dismantled before the façade is finished.
Approvals. The main contractor signs off on anything mounted inside the hoarding, and the technician goes through the same HSE induction as any other visitor. Work at height needs a permit from the site’s safety team. If the best sightline is on somebody else’s rooftop, you need written no-objection from that building owner or the facilities management company before anyone climbs. It is worth agreeing early on where the camera is not allowed to look, since residential windows in adjacent towers are a legitimate privacy concern and easier to design out than to argue about later.
Install day. Half a day per position for the physical work: bracket, housing, solar panel aligned south at roughly 25 degrees of tilt, battery, router with a local SIM. The paperwork usually takes longer than the bracket. Before leaving, we pull the first test frames and check them on a calibrated screen rather than a phone, because a soft focus point discovered in month four costs four months.
Steady state. Capture runs automatically. Thumbnails upload daily over LTE so we can see the system is alive and the frame is still clean. Full-resolution frames get collected in person, because pushing 380 GB through a mobile connection is a waste of money. A technician visits every two to four weeks, more often between March and May.
Handover. Interim films along the way, a final edit at completion, and the full frame archive delivered as files you own.
Before the install, have four things ready: the site programme with expected completion, a contact in the contractor’s HSE team, confirmation of who owns the intended mount point, and a decision on whether night work will happen. Everything else can be sorted on site.
Interval, resolution, power: the numbers that shape the project
Interval is the first real decision, and it is arithmetic before it is taste. Assume daylight capture, roughly 06:00 to 19:00, on a 24-month build:

Nobody watches a 38-minute timelapse. A finished film runs two to three minutes, which at 25 fps is 3,000 to 4,500 frames. From a 15-minute interval on a two-year build you are keeping somewhere between one frame in eight and one in thirteen, depending on how long the final cut runs, and that surplus is exactly what buys you editorial freedom: slow the topping-out sequence down, race through the eight quiet weeks of MEP first fix, and still have material left.

Thirty minutes is enough for a slow-moving infrastructure job where the interesting change happens across quarters, not days. Fifteen is where most Dubai towers land.
If the site pours concrete at night, keep 24-hour capture and cull the dead frames in post. Night pours under floodlight are some of the strongest material a construction timelapse produces, and you cannot recover them retroactively.
Resolution. Capture stills far larger than the delivery format. A 4K frame is 3840 px wide; a 6000 px still lets you punch in to about 64% of the frame and still export native 4K. That headroom is how a static camera produces a film with slow pushes and pans inside it. Every «camera move» in a good construction timelapse is a crop animated in post.
Power. Solar panel plus battery, sized for about five days without useful sun. Site power is not an option for a system that has to run for three years, because the temporary supply moves as the build progresses and gets cut without notice during handover of sections. Dust on the panel cuts output well before anyone notices, which is another reason for the maintenance cycle.
Housing. IP66 or better, and the IP rating is the easy part. What kills electronics here is internal temperature, so the housing wants to be white, shaded by its own sun hood, and vented. A standard black outdoor box on a Dubai rooftop in July is a slow cooking appliance.
Storage. At around 10 MB per frame, a 15-minute interval over two years produces roughly 380 GB per camera position. That archive is a deliverable in its own right and often outlives the film, since marketing teams come back to it three years later for a brochure image of a floor that no longer exists.
What Dubai does to hardware that a spec sheet will not tell you
Heat is the obvious one. Summer air hits 45 to 50°C, and a rooftop enclosure in direct sun runs considerably hotter inside than the ambient reading. Batteries degrade faster, sensors get noisier, and any component rated «up to 50°C» is being tested at its limit for four months a year.
Dust is the one that actually ruins footage. A film of fine sand on the front glass turns a sharp frame milky, and it does not announce itself in a thumbnail preview. During shamal season, roughly March to May, front glass can go from clean to visibly hazy in under two weeks. That is why the maintenance interval tightens in spring: most of a visit is glass, panel, desiccant, and a look at the mount bolts. Autumn mornings bring condensation instead, so the desiccant pack gets replaced on schedule rather than when someone remembers.
There is also a rhythm to Dubai sites that shows up in the footage. From 15 June to 15 September, outdoor work in direct sunlight is banned between 12:30 and 15:00 under the annual midday break rule, and MoHRE enforces it with fines per worker. In the final film, that reads as a site that empties out every summer afternoon. It is not a fault, but it needs an editorial decision: either cut around it or lean into it and let the daily pulse of the site become part of the story. Ramadan shifts working hours the same way.
Access is its own category of problem. A technician needs an escort, a valid induction, and a route to the mount that does not depend on a hoist that gets removed at week 90. If the mount sits on a neighbouring building, someone in that building’s FM team has to still remember the agreement two years and one staff change later. Nobody in this market publishes a single construction timelapse price, and there is a reason: a 6-month fit-out with one camera and a 34-month tower with three positions and quarterly investor films are different businesses wearing the same name. Quotes are usually structured in three parts: a one-off install fee, a monthly running fee covering maintenance and monitoring, and separate edit fees for interim and final films. Compare offers part by part, because a low monthly fee with visits every eight weeks is not cheaper than a higher one with visits every three, it is just a different distribution of who eats the dusty-glass problem.

Post-production is most of the craft
The camera is the easy half. Almost nobody selling timelapse in this market talks about what happens to the frames afterwards, which is where the difference between a usable film and a flickering slideshow lives.
Deflicker. Consecutive frames shot minutes apart never match exactly on exposure. Cloud passes, sun angle shifts, auto-exposure hunts by a fraction of a stop. Played back at 25 fps, those tiny differences become a strobe. Deflickering across tens of thousands of frames is the single biggest technical task in the edit, and it is the first thing that gives away a DIY timelapse.
Culling. Nights, blank Fridays, days when a crane sat parked, frames shot through a dust storm, the week the hoarding banner blocked a third of the view. Somebody has to look at all of it.
Stabilisation. Over two years a mount creeps. Thermal expansion, wind load, one enthusiastic technician leaning on a bracket. Frames need to be aligned to a fixed reference so the building does not wobble.
Retiming. Screen time should follow interest, not calendar. Excavation and piling can take five months and deserve fifteen seconds. Superstructure and façade deserve the bulk of the film. Handover deserves a held final frame.
Colour. Sun angle in December is nothing like sun angle in June, and a build spans both twice. Grading holds a consistent look across the year so the film reads as one piece.

Progress films while the crane is still up
Waiting until handover to see anything is the most common mistake in how construction timelapse projects get scoped. The film that matters commercially is often the one delivered in month nine.
Quarterly is the sweet spot for a 24 to 36 month build: four to twelve short films across the programme, each 30 to 60 seconds, cut from the frames captured since the last one. During superstructure, when a floor goes up every week or so, monthly makes sense because the change is genuinely visible at that cadence. During fit-out, quarterly is plenty.
Milestone-triggered cuts work better than calendar ones for some clients: excavation complete, ground floor slab, topping out, façade start, façade complete, handover. Six films, each tied to something a sales team or an investor update actually cares about.
What these get used for, in our experience with Dubai developers: LinkedIn posts that outperform renders because the thing is visibly real, screens in the sales gallery, quarterly investor decks, and contractor prequalification submissions where proving delivery on a comparable project is worth more than another brochure.
When a long-run timelapse is the wrong tool
Under three months of build, skip it. A fit-out or a villa refurbishment gives better material from three or four properly crewed visits with a camera operator, ideally with the same framing each time, than from a fixed post that has to be installed, permitted, and removed for a twelve-week job.
If there is no sightline that survives the programme, say so early. Some plots in Business Bay and Downtown get boxed in by neighbouring towers partway through, and the only available mount is inside the future building footprint. Better to find that on the site walk than in month eleven.
If the actual requirement is monitoring for delay claims or dispute evidence, that is a site-monitoring product with continuous recording and time-stamped retention. Different tool, different vendor.
And if the story needs faces, interviews, machinery at eye level, or anything with sound, a timelapse cannot deliver it. Those are shoot days, and they combine well with a timelapse rather than competing with it. Do I need a permit or NOC for a construction timelapse camera?
For a camera mounted inside the site hoarding, the main contractor’s approval plus a work-at-height permit and HSE induction covers it. If the mount sits on a neighbouring building or rooftop, you need written no-objection from that owner or their FM company. Aerial coverage is a separate approval process with civil aviation and police authorities.
