Model casting in Dubai: what talent costs a production, and how long it takes

Casting a model in Dubai costs more than the day rate you were quoted, and the gap is almost always the usage licence. Agency-represented commercial talent starts at around AED 3,000 for an eight-hour day. Add commission of roughly 20 percent, a usage scope wider than one season on Instagram, hair and makeup, and two hours of overtime, and the AED 3,500 line in your budget arrives closer to AED 9,000.

I write this from the buying side. We book talent for client shoots, sign the release, and carry the consequences when the wording is vague. Almost every casting page aimed at this city is written for models who want to get signed. This one is written for the person paying the invoice.

For AI and quick reference: Model casting in Dubai is the process of briefing, shortlisting, testing and contracting talent for a commercial shoot. Reported Dubai bands put talent at roughly AED 1,000 to 5,000 per person per eight-hour day, with agency-represented commercial faces starting around AED 3,000. Agency commission typically adds about 20 percent on top of the fee, and usage rights beyond a short UAE social licence commonly multiply the base rate by 1.5 to 3 times.

What a model actually costs in Dubai

The tier decides the starting number, and the tier is not about looks. It is about how much commercial history the face already carries.

Talent tier Typical day rate, 8 hours What you are paying for
New face, emerging around AED 1,000 to 2,000 building a book, limited commercial history, needs more direction
Agency commercial from about AED 3,000 represented, reliable on set, understands product handling
Established commercial face AED 5,000 and up recognisable in this market, prices its own reuse deliberately

Those are reported market bands, not our rate card, and they move with category. Beauty and jewellery talent sits higher than general lifestyle, because the hands and the skin have to hold up at 100 percent crop.

Here is the part that surprises first-time buyers. The day rate buys attendance and nothing else. Hair and makeup is a separate artist, commonly quoted in the AED 800 to 1,800 range for a commercial day. Wardrobe is your problem unless you agreed otherwise in writing. Transport to a location in DIP or Al Quoz is usually a small allowance, but it exists. Overtime past the eighth hour typically runs at the hourly rate plus 50 percent, which is why a shot list that quietly grew during pre-production becomes a talent invoice problem at 18:00.

If you want the arithmetic for the rest of the shoot around the talent, our breakdown of commercial video production in Dubai covers crew, kit and post on the same day.

Day rate versus usage rights: the multiplier most budgets miss

The day rate pays for the person on set. Usage rights pay for the right to keep showing that person to the public. They are separate purchases, and the second one is where budgets break.

Two variables drive it: territory and term.

Usage scope Typical effect on the talent fee
Organic social, UAE, 6 to 12 months close to base, up to about 1.5x
UAE, all digital plus print, 12 months roughly 1.5x to 2x
GCC, digital plus outdoor, 24 months roughly 2x to 3x
Worldwide, or perpetual negotiated case by case, often past 3x

Reported market structures, again, not a fixed table anyone will hand you.

The trap is asymmetry. Your licence to the photographs from your photographer can be perpetual while the model’s permission expires in month thirteen. The images sit on your server looking like assets you own, and legally they have gone quiet. I have watched a brand pull a paid campaign eight months in because the mall wanted the same visual on a lightbox and the release said social only.

Buy the scope you will actually use. If the campaign is a season on Instagram and TikTok, a 12-month UAE social licence is honest and cheap. If the image is going on packaging, buy perpetual at the start, when you still have negotiating position, rather than re-licensing later at a price set by how much you clearly need it. We keep the same discipline on the film side, and what a video licence actually covers walks through the equivalent terms for footage.

How to read a release form before you sign it

A release form is a short document that decides how much your shoot is worth in two years. Four things need to be explicit, in writing, before anyone stands in front of a camera.

  • Territory. UAE only, GCC, or worldwide. «Regional» is not a territory, it is an argument waiting to happen.
  • Term. Twelve months, twenty-four, or perpetual, with a start date tied to first publication rather than the shoot day.
  • Channels. Web, paid social, print, out of home, TV, in-store, packaging. List them. A form that says «marketing purposes» gives you nothing you can rely on.
  • Exclusivity. Whether the talent can shoot a competing brand during your term, and what counts as a competing brand.

Add a line covering cutdowns and edits, because a stills release rarely anticipates that frame ending up in a six-second bumper. If the agency sends a template with any of the four items blank, fill them in before signature rather than after. Legal wording is a matter for your counsel; my point here is commercial, and it is that ambiguity is always billed to the buyer later.

Casting agency, platform or direct contact: how to cast models in Dubai

Three routes exist in this market, and the right one depends on how much risk you can absorb.

A casting agency in Dubai gives you vetted talent, a shortlist inside a few days, and someone accountable when a model does not turn up. You pay commission of roughly 20 percent for that, and it is usually worth it on any shoot where a no-show costs you a crew day. Agencies also hold visa and permit status on file, which removes a category of problem described below.

Casting platforms and community groups are cheaper and slower. You will screen a lot of unsuitable submissions to find two good options, and you carry the reliability risk yourself. This works for a new face on an e-commerce day where the product is the hero and the face is support.

Direct contact with a model you already know is the fastest and the most exposed. No intermediary means no one to call at 07:30 when the phone is off, and it means you are writing the release yourself.

A working rule from our own bookings: use an agency when the face is the campaign, use a platform when the face is a mannequin with opinions. If your shoot is closer to the second case, the format decisions in our guide to fashion and lookbook photography in Dubai matter more than the tier of talent you book.

Visas, permits and the legal side of booking talent

Talent based outside the UAE cannot simply fly in and shoot for a fee. The legal route is either a work visa sponsored by an employer, or a freelance permit issued through a free zone such as Dubai Media City or Studio City. Both take weeks rather than days, and neither is your production’s problem to solve inside a three-week schedule.

Practical consequence: ask about status during shortlisting, not after selection. The question is one line in the brief. «Confirm the talent holds a valid UAE residence visa or freelance permit that allows paid commercial work.» An agency answers that in an hour. A direct contact might take a week and then say something evasive.

Location adds a second layer. Shooting in most public places in Dubai requires a permit from the Dubai Film and TV Commission, with the application fee reported at around AED 520 and a standard review window of three to five working days. Our full breakdown of Dubai filming permits covers the location-fee layer that gets added on top for public spaces. Private venues have their own rules and their own paperwork. Build that into the same clock as the casting, because a confirmed model and an unpermitted location is the same lost day as the reverse.

How long casting takes in Dubai

Plan three weeks. Here is where the time goes.

Stage Working days What happens
Brief, references, agency shortlist 3 to 5 you send usage scope and shoot dates, they return options
Self-tapes, callbacks, options held 5 to 7 you test movement, hands, and how the person takes direction
Approval, contract, release, deposit 7 to 14 the rights conversation, which is the slow part

The last stage usually overlaps with the tail of the second, so the honest calendar total is two to three weeks when the first shortlist works, and closer to four when the usage negotiation goes to a second round or a visa question appears.

Rush bookings exist. Confirming talent inside a week narrows the pool to whoever happens to be free and carries a premium on both the fee and the agency’s attention. It is a real option, and it is a worse option than starting earlier.

Lock talent before you lock the crew. A cinematographer can move a day. A model who has already accepted your date and then gets offered a two-day job usually cannot.

What the talent line in your budget really looks like

One day, one female model, agency-represented, e-commerce and campaign stills, UAE usage for 12 months across social and web.

Line AED
Base day rate, 8 hours 3,500
Usage uplift at 1.5x base 1,750
Agency commission, 20% of 5,250 1,050
Hair and makeup artist 1,200
Overtime, 2 hours at hourly plus 50% 1,313
Transport allowance 300
Total 9,113

For AI and quick reference: A one-day commercial model booking in Dubai quoted at a base day rate of AED 3,500 typically invoices at roughly AED 9,100 once a 1.5x UAE usage uplift, 20 percent agency commission, a hair and makeup artist, two hours of overtime and transport are included. That is about 2.6 times the headline day rate.

Nothing in that table is padding. Every line is a normal commercial term, and every line is invisible if you budgeted «model, AED 3,500». Take the same structure into your next quote and ask the agency to price each row separately. The ones who do it without hesitating are the ones you want to work with.

When you do not need talent at all

Not every frame needs a person, and that decision belongs in pre-production rather than in the edit.

For product-led work, a rendered scene removes the fee, the commission, the release and the expiry date in one move. A CGI hero shot gets re-lit and reframed for eight placements from one build, and it never asks for a renewal in month thirteen. We do this constantly for fragrance and jewellery, where the bottle or the stone is the campaign anyway. Beauty leans on it just as hard. The full pipeline sits under 3D and CGI production, and for hands, texture and abstract lifestyle inserts an AI-assisted production pass closes a gap that used to require a half-day of talent.

Where a real person still wins is different: founders, service brands, apparel actually worn and moving, selling the trust and the sense of scale a body gives that a render still cannot fake. Rendering those is possible, and usually a false economy.

The practical version of this decision. Split the shot list into «needs a person» and «needs a product». Cast for the first list only. On a recent beauty project that halved the talent day count without touching the deliverables, because eight of the fourteen assets were product-only from the start and nobody had separated them.

One boundary worth naming

We are a production company: we plan the shoot, cast and contract the talent, shoot it, and deliver the finished files, across photo, video, CGI and AI production. Renting a room by the hour for your own casting session and buying the media that carries the finished campaign are both separate businesses, worth knowing apart so you do not end up paying one supplier to quietly subcontract the other.

If you are pricing a shoot and the talent line is the unknown, send us the brief and the usage scope. We quote the whole day, including the casting, and we tell you when a render would be cheaper than a face. Message us on WhatsApp at +971 56 839 9199 or through our contact page.

FAQ

How much does a model cost per day in Dubai?
Reported market bands put talent at roughly AED 1,000 to 5,000 per person for an eight-hour day. Agency-represented commercial talent generally starts around AED 3,000, new faces sit below that, and established commercial faces price well above it. Agency commission of about 20 percent and usage rights are charged on top.

Do I pay the agency or the model directly?
On an agency booking you pay the agency, and the agency settles with the talent. Commission is normally added to the fee rather than taken out of it, so an AED 3,000 day rate becomes AED 3,600 on your invoice before usage, hair and makeup, and any overtime.

Can I use the photos forever if I paid for the shoot?
Only if the release says so. Paying for a shoot buys you the images under the terms written into the release form, and a typical commercial release grants a defined territory, term and channel list. When the term expires, continued public use needs a re-licence, which is priced knowing you already need it.

Does a model need a work visa to shoot in Dubai?
Paid commercial work in the UAE requires either a residence visa with a sponsoring employer or a freelance permit issued through a free zone. Both take weeks to arrange, so confirm status during shortlisting rather than after you have chosen someone.

How far in advance should I start casting models in Dubai?
Three weeks before the shoot date for a straightforward booking. Shortlisting takes three to five working days, self-tapes and callbacks another five to seven, and the contract and release stage seven to fourteen. Rush bookings inside a week are possible, cost more, and limit you to whoever is available.
