What a car shoot delivers
A car is a mirror on wheels. Everything around it ends up in the paint, which is why automotive work is closer to lighting a large reflective object than to photographing a subject. The frames below solve different jobs, and most projects need a mix of them.
- Hero exteriors. The three-quarter front, the profile, the rear three-quarter. These are the frames that carry a launch, a cover image or a showroom wall, and they take the most lighting work per shot.
- Detail and craftsmanship. Badge, grille, headlight signature, wheel, stitching, trim, exhaust. Buyers zoom into these before they enquire, and they are what separates a real production from a walk-around with a phone.
- Interior. Cabin wide, dashboard, seats, screen and controls. Interiors are the hardest part of the job, because the dynamic range inside a car fights the light outside the windows. That gets solved with bracketed passes and blending, not with one exposure.
- Motion. Rolling shots from a tracking vehicle, panning at speed, wheel spin. This is where a static listing becomes an advertisement.
- Studio work on a clean set. Light painting in multiple passes, then compositing, which gives a fully controlled result with no reflections you did not put there and a background that can be swapped later.
- Environment and lifestyle. Skyline, marina, desert road, underground parking. The location sells the positioning of the car as much as the car itself.
- Listing sets and 360 spins for dealership and marketplace pages, shot to one repeatable standard so a whole stock page looks like one business.
How a car shoot runs
- Brief. What the images are for, which channels they go to, and whether the background needs to survive being replaced later. A dealership listing set and a launch campaign are different shoots, and treating them as one job helps nobody.
- Preparation. The car is detailed, dressed and checked before the camera comes out. Water spots, fingerprints on chrome and a dusty wheel arch take longer to retouch than they would have taken to wipe.
- Location or studio. Outdoor sets are planned around the light and around what is allowed at that location. Studio sets get built for full control over reflection, which is the reason a studio car shot looks the way it does.
- Shoot. Light is built pass by pass and the camera stays locked on a tripod, so the passes align in post. Frames are reviewed tethered on a monitor while the car is still in position, because moving it back to exactly the same spot is not a small thing.
- Post. Passes blended, reflections cleaned, background handled, colour matched to the actual paint rather than to whatever looked nice on the day.
- Delivery. Files in the sizes and crops each channel needs, and layered files where the retouching has to continue on your side.
Who books car photography in Dubai
Dealerships and showrooms that need a consistent standard across changing stock. Luxury rental fleets, where the entire booking decision happens on a phone screen and the photos are the product. Custom and tuning shops documenting builds. Motorsport teams and event organisers. Manufacturers and agencies running launch campaigns. Collectors who want their cars photographed properly once. Private sellers at the top of the market, where a weak photo set costs real money at the negotiating table.
Why SL Media
We produce the whole thing in house: our own studio in Dubai Investment Park 2, one crew shooting and retouching, and a CGI and VFX pipeline that most photographers have to outsource. That last part matters more in automotive than anywhere else, because so much of the final image is built after the shutter closes. Backgrounds get replaced, sets get extended, and a car that never came to Dubai can be placed in a Dubai frame.
Shooting with post in mind also means the files are usable downstream: clean plates, alignment across passes, and layers a 3D team can work with. Work samples live at vimeo.com/slsdxb.
