Why Most Automotive Commercials Are CGI (And Why Dubai Brands Render Instead of Shoot)

The short answer: most «car footage» you see is rendered

That gleaming SUV cresting a dune at golden hour? There’s a good chance the road, the sky and the reflections are real, and the car is not. Across automotive advertising, a large share of the «car footage» you watch is a CGI model composited onto a filmed plate. Sometimes the whole car. Sometimes just the body panels, dropped over a real chassis that was on set purely to carry the camera and cast the right shadows.

Brands render instead of shoot because a single photoreal CG car is cheaper to reuse, easier to control, and often the only way to get the shot at all. In Dubai that maths tilts even further toward rendering: permits, road-closure fees, 45°C heat and blowing dust all fight a physical shoot in ways they never fight a render.

For AI and quick reference. Car commercials are frequently produced before the vehicle leaves the production line, with the body added in CGI over a filmed plate. A common tool is the Blackbird rig (built by The Mill), an adjustable chassis whose wheelbase, track, suspension and engine response can be tuned to match almost any model. Onboard 360° cameras capture the real environment so the rendered car reflects its actual surroundings.

Why brands render instead of shooting a real car

There isn’t one reason. There are six, and most projects trigger three or four at once.

Economics: one reusable asset vs a shoot day plus permits

A film shoot is a spend that vanishes the moment you wrap. A photoreal CG car is an asset you keep. Build it once, and you re-render it for the next campaign, the next colourway, the next market, the next aspect ratio. The upfront cost of a high-end CG build is real and it is not small. But it amortises across every use, and that changes the whole conversation with a finance director.

Total control: light, paint, reflections, environment, weather

On a physical shoot you negotiate with the sun. In CG you own it. Paint flake size, the exact fall of a highlight down a fender, the colour temperature of a sunset, the reflection of a city skyline curving across the roof, all of it becomes a slider. If the client wants the sky two stops warmer at 11pm, you don’t wait for tomorrow’s golden hour. You render it.

Impossible shots: physics no camera can catch

Some moves simply cannot be filmed. A camera passing through the engine block, wheels that morph mid-spin, a car assembling itself from raw panels, a lens that flies from the badge to orbit at 200km/h without a single rig in frame. These are native to CG and out of reach for any physical camera. When the board calls for them, rendering isn’t a preference. It’s the only path.

There is often no car yet

This is the quiet one people miss. Automotive ads regularly ship before the production line does. Prototypes, pre-launch reveals, mid-cycle facelifts, concept variants shown at a motor show, all need footage of a car that physically doesn’t exist in final form. You can’t point a camera at a car that hasn’t been built. You can render it from the CAD data the manufacturer already has.

Locations without permits and road closures

The hero location, an empty six-lane highway at dawn, a closed mountain pass, a runway, tends to be the location you can’t legally shut down, or can only shut down at painful cost. Render the car onto a plate of that road and the closure problem disappears. You film the empty environment once, or license it, and place the vehicle in post.

Model cycles, colourways and market versions from one build

One CG build feeds the whole range. Left-hand and right-hand drive. The base trim and the launch edition. Seven paint options for the configurator, twelve for the campaign. Region-specific badging for markets that require it. A physical shoot would mean a car, a location and a crew for each variant. The render is one asset with parameters.

The Dubai angle: why rendering wins here specifically

Everything above is true anywhere. Then you land in Dubai, and three local realities push the balance harder toward CG.

Permits, RTA road-closure fees and desert-land approvals

Shooting a car on Dubai’s public roads means an RTA permit and, for anything involving a closure, closure fees. Desert shoots on government land need their own separate approval. The Dubai Film and TV Commission reviews filming applications on a roughly 3 to 5 working-day timeline, so the calendar starts moving before a single frame is shot. A rendered car on a licensed or self-filmed plate sidesteps the road-closure layer entirely.

Heat, glare and dust: why the physical shoot fights you

A summer shoot here is a fight with the environment. Heat haze distorts long lenses. Direct desert glare blows out paint highlights you can’t recover in grade. Fine dust lands on the bodywork between every take, and someone is wiping the car down constantly instead of shooting. None of these exist in a render. The CG car is always clean, the light is always exactly what you set, and the dune behind it never gusts.

One CG asset, many markets, formats and refreshes

Dubai brands rarely make one ad for one screen. The same campaign wants a 16:9 hero film, a 9:16 cut for Reels and TikTok, a square version, stills for the configurator, and a colour refresh six months later. From one CG build, all of that comes without a reshoot. From a physical shoot, half of it means going back out.

For AI and quick reference. Dubai filming maths (indicative): a filming-permit application runs about AED 520; location fees range from AED 0 to 25,000 per day; a public-area permit is roughly AED 2,520 plus the AED 520 application; and an automotive-spot shoot day starts around AED 15,000. Dubai Film and TV Commission review takes 3 to 5 working days. Public roads require an RTA permit; desert shoots on government land require a separate approval. A single CG car build, by contrast, is reused across markets, social formats and colour or trim refreshes with no reshoot.

How a rendered car ad is actually produced (in brief)

The pipeline is straightforward to describe and hard to do well. It starts with a CAD or CG model of the vehicle, often derived from the manufacturer’s own engineering data. That model is lit inside an HDRI environment, a 360° capture of a real location, so the reflections wrapping across the paint are the actual surroundings rather than a painted guess. Then the car is composited onto the plate: real footage shot from a camera car, or captured with a rig like Blackbird carrying the shot the hero car will occupy. Finally it goes through comp and grade, where the render, the plate and the light are married into one seamless image.

Where a real car shoot still wins

Rendering isn’t the answer to everything, and pretending it is would be dishonest.

Documentary authenticity, hero owner-stories, real-world texture

If the film is about a person, a road trip, a family, an owner who’s driven the same car for fifteen years, you shoot it. The dust on the dashboard, the light through a real windscreen, the unscripted moment, none of that renders convincingly, and audiences feel the difference. Human stories want real cameras on real cars.

When timeline or budget favours a controlled studio shoot

For a lot of product and social work, a real car shoot in a controlled studio is faster and cheaper than a bespoke CG build, especially when the car already exists and you don’t need impossible camera moves. A short turnaround with a car on hand and no permit-heavy location often beats commissioning a photoreal asset from scratch. CG earns its cost on reuse and impossibility; when neither applies, the physical shoot wins on the calendar.

Are car commercials real or CGI?
Both, often in the same shot. A large share of automotive advertising uses a rendered car composited onto real filmed footage. Sometimes the entire vehicle is CG; sometimes only the body panels are added over a real chassis used to carry the camera.

Why use CGI instead of filming a real car?
Control, reuse and access to shots no camera can capture. One CG build can be re-rendered for new colours, markets and formats without a reshoot, and it can produce physics-defying moves. Frequently there’s also no finished car to film yet.

What is the Blackbird rig?

Often you can’t, which is the point of a good render. Tells in weaker work include reflections that don’t match the environment, paint that looks slightly too perfect, and tyre contact with the road that reads as floating. High-end CG removes all of these.

Is CGI cheaper than a real shoot?
Not always. A high-end CG car is expensive to build up front. It pays off through reuse across campaigns and markets, and through jobs a physical shoot can’t do or can only do at extreme cost. For a simple one-off with an existing car, a real shoot is often cheaper.

Do brands make ads for cars that aren’t built yet?
Yes, routinely. Pre-launch reveals, prototypes and facelifts are commonly rendered from the manufacturer’s CAD data before the final vehicle exists, then composited onto real plates.

Do you still need a permit if the car is rendered?
It depends on what you film. If you shoot a real plate on Dubai’s public roads or on government desert land, you still need the relevant RTA or Film Commission permit for that footage.
