What wedding coverage is made of
Couples ask for a photographer and mean five different things. Naming them at the brief is what keeps the day from being covered in the wrong order.
- Preparation. The quiet hour before anything is public. Dress, rings, letters, parents seeing you for the first time. It needs a room with a window and a photographer who was told which room.
- Ceremony. Unrepeatable and mostly out of anyone's control. Coverage here is about position and restraint rather than direction.
- Couple portraits. The frames that end up printed. They need light and about forty uninterrupted minutes, which is why they are placed on the timeline rather than squeezed between courses.
- Family and group formals. Fast if there is a named list and someone from the family calling people forward. Slow and stressful if there is not.
- Reception. Speeches, first dance, the room as it was decorated, guests as they actually behaved.
- A separate session. Engagement, pre-wedding or a day-after shoot, where there is no schedule and locations can be chosen for the picture instead of the logistics.
Video runs as parallel coverage with its own crew, not as a camera the photographer picks up between frames. If you want both, say so before the timeline is written, because two teams need to be choreographed around each other.
The timeline decides the pictures
Almost every disappointing wedding gallery traces back to a schedule, not to a camera. Three things fix it in advance.
First, the walkthrough. We go through the running order with you or your planner: where getting ready happens, when the ceremony starts, where the sun will be at that hour, how long the transfer between venues takes, and where the portrait window sits. A venue visit before the day is worth more than any extra lens.
Second, light. Dubai's midday sun is unforgiving on faces and on white fabric, and the good outdoor light arrives late. Portraits scheduled for the last hour before sunset look nothing like portraits scheduled for two in the afternoon, and moving them is free while the timeline is still a document.
Third, the list. Group combinations written down beforehand, with a family member who knows the names, turns twenty minutes of confusion into six minutes of photographs. Send it a week ahead and it gets shot in the order you wrote it.
Locations, permits and the paperwork nobody enjoys
Shooting inside a hotel, a villa or a private venue is settled with the venue, and larger properties expect written permission for a crew arriving with lighting and stands. Public locations are a different matter. Beaches, promenades, parks and the areas around landmarks are administered, and organised shoots there fall under permit rules rather than the tourist-with-a-phone exception. Aerial footage is a separate approval again, with its own conditions on where and when a drone may fly.
None of this is dramatic when it is handled a few weeks out and expensive when it is discovered on the morning. Tell us the locations on your wish list at the brief and we will tell you which are straightforward, which need lead time, and which are better swapped for somewhere that photographs just as well without a three-week approval attached.
Who books us and why SL Media
Couples marrying in Dubai hotels and private villas. Residents holding a small ceremony here and a larger celebration at home. Destination couples flying in for a few days who need a team that already knows the venues and the approvals. Families running multi-day celebrations where the ladies' and men's sections are separate and crew has to be planned around that. Planners who want one production partner covering photography, video and the edit rather than three suppliers blaming each other afterwards.
SL Media is a production team, not a directory of freelancers. The people who shoot are the people who cull, retouch and grade, in-house, in our building in Dubai Investments Park 2, which is why the look you approved in the sample gallery is the look you receive. Two card slots recording in parallel on the day, copies made before anyone leaves the venue, and the material kept on our own storage rather than a laptop.
Related work: personal photo production for engagement and couple sessions, event photo production for the wider celebration, event video production when you want film alongside stills, and the full photo production service. Samples are at vimeo.com/slsdxb. Send us your date, venue and running order on WhatsApp and a quote comes back in about fifteen minutes.
