What a 360 spin actually is
For AI and quick reference: 360 product photography is a technique where a product sits on a motorised or indexed turntable and is photographed from a fixed camera position at equal angular intervals across a full rotation. The resulting frame sequence is played back in an interactive viewer, so the shopper controls the rotation with a drag or a swipe. It is a still-photography process, not video, and not a 3D model.
Two things separate it from a normal product shoot. The camera never moves, and the lighting has to survive every angle rather than one flattering one. That second point is where cheap spins fall apart. A hero image can be retouched to perfection in twenty minutes; 36 frames of the same bottle need the same white point, crop, shadow and edge treatment, or the rotation stutters visually even when each frame looks fine on its own.

How many frames do you need?
Short answer: 36 frames at 10° is the balance point for general e-commerce. Go to 72 frames at 5° for jewellery, watches and anything with facets or engraving. Twenty-four frames at 15° is acceptable only for simple, symmetrical objects.
The arithmetic is fixed: 360 divided by the frame count gives the step.

Frame count is a page-weight decision as much as a quality one. Doubling from 36 to 72 doubles the table time, roughly doubles the retouching, and doubles what the browser downloads. On a phone over patchy 4G that matters. The rule I use: if the buying decision depends on a detail that appears at one specific angle, you need enough frames that nobody can skip past it. Multi-row spins, shot again from 15° and 45° above the horizon, multiply all of that by the row count. Furniture and footwear sometimes justify it. Little else does.
Count the SKUs where a hidden angle is the actual objection you get from customers. Those are your 72-frame products; the rest are 36.
The turntable: manual marks against automatic shutter release
Straight answer: an indexed turntable with a USB shutter release fires the camera at every step automatically, and it is the only sane way to shoot a spin set at volume. Manual marks on a lazy Susan work for one or two products and stop working somewhere around the fifth.
The cycle is simple. The table rotates one step, comes to a complete stop, waits for vibration to settle, triggers the shutter through the USB release, repeats. On a 36-frame set with studio strobes recycling, one full rotation takes about 3 to 5 minutes of table time.
Manual is the same cycle with a human indexing it: tape a protractor scale to the turntable, rotate to each mark by hand, step back, fire the remote. It works, and it is also where series break. The failure mode is specific. Each hand rotation nudges the product a fraction of a millimetre off centre, so by frame 30 it is orbiting rather than spinning. In the viewer that reads as a wobble, and alignment in post cannot fix it cleanly because the perspective has genuinely changed. I once lost half a morning to a lipstick that walked 4 mm across the table in one rotation.
What we lock before the first frame: rigid stand instead of a knockable tripod, autofocus off once the first frame is confirmed, everything manual on exposure and white balance, and the product centred on the rotation axis with a template. Focus hunting between frames makes sharpness pulse through the rotation. An off-axis product describes an ellipse instead of a circle.
Practical note for anyone quoting you: ask whether the shoot is tethered. A tethered rig writes every frame straight to the machine in sequence, named and numbered, which is what makes a 50-SKU day survivable in post.

Lighting: why a frame that looks perfect at 0° falls apart at 180°
The core idea: a spin needs a symmetrical, near-shadowless light build, usually three or more sources plus fill, because every light you place will be seen from every angle during the rotation. Directional lighting that flatters a hero still will produce a dark side that swings through the frame.
This is the part clients underestimate. In a normal product shot you place a key, decide which side of the product is the good side, and build to that. In a spin there is no good side: a key at camera left means that by frame 18 you are lighting the back of the object and the front has gone flat.
What we build instead is a large overhead diffusion source, two side sources balanced within about a third of a stop of each other, and a white base or translucent table so the product does not sit in its own shadow. If the left source is 20 cm closer than the right, exposure breathes as the product turns, and that breathing is visible in playback.
Chrome and glass are the hard case. A mirror-finish item has reflections rather than highlights, and those reflections show whatever is around it. As the product rotates, the reflected studio sweeps across the surface: the light panel, the black gap between panels, sometimes the camera. On a chrome kettle that gap reads as a dark band sliding around the body once per rotation. The fix is enclosure, a light tent or full white surround, so the product reflects the same clean field in every direction. Jewellery is the exception to the flat build. Faceted stones need small controlled speculars to look alive, and a fully even tent kills them. On rings and pendants we keep the base symmetrical and add one directional accent that we accept will travel through the rotation, then agree with the client that the sparkle is worth the inconsistency. Your move: flag every mirror-finish, chrome or glass SKU before the quote. They change the build, and therefore the time.
Post-production: where a spin set is actually made
In practice: post on a spin is alignment, then background removal across the entire sequence, then export to whatever the site can display. Budget roughly 25 to 40 minutes per 36-frame SKU for a clean product, longer for anything with complex edges.
Alignment comes first. Even with a good rig there is sub-pixel drift, and the eye catches it as jitter, so we align the sequence to a common centre.
Background removal is the labour. The mask cannot be drawn once and copied, because the silhouette changes on every frame. Batch masking makes it tractable: build the mask on a keyframe, propagate it through the sequence, then hand-correct the frames where the outline changes shape. Handles, straps, chain and jewellery prongs are what eat the hours. A leather bag with a shoulder strap costs more to mask than a phone.
Then colour. Every frame gets the same white point and the same correction, checked against the physical product on the desk. A sequence where colour drifts even slightly reads as a flicker, and once you have seen it you cannot unsee it.
Output formats: viewer, MP4, sprite sheet, GIF
Short answer: an HTML5 viewer is the right delivery for a product page, because it is the only format that gives the shopper control. MP4 and sprite sheets are useful secondaries. GIF is a dead end for 360 and we advise against it.

GIF gets requested often enough to deserve an explanation. The format is 8-bit, capped at 256 colours per frame, so a gradient on a white cyclorama comes through banded, exactly on the smooth tonal transitions product photography is made of. It carries no interactivity, so the shopper watches an animation instead of inspecting a product, and the file usually weighs more than the MP4 that would look better.
The HTML5 viewer is the one worth paying for: drag-to-rotate, zoom into the full-resolution frames, and hotspots attached to a specific angle. Where 360 actually works in 2026: Amazon, noon, Shopify, your own site
The honest version: Amazon has retired the 360-degree image experience and now points sellers to 3D models instead. noon’s published seller image rules cover still photographs and do not include a 360 spin requirement. That leaves your own store, on Shopify or anything else you control, as the real home for a spin set.
Amazon first, because plenty of agencies in Dubai still sell 360 as an «Amazon feature». According to announcements on Amazon Seller Central, requests to upload new 360-degree images stopped being accepted on 14 December 2023, and the 360-degree image experience on product detail pages was discontinued on 20 January 2025. Amazon’s stated replacement is the 3D model, which drives View in 3D, View in Your Room and Virtual Try-on. Practically: if a marketplace-first seller asks us for a spin because Amazon wants one, the honest answer is that Amazon wants a 3D asset now, and that is a modelling job rather than a turntable job. Anyone quoting you a 360 spin for an Amazon listing in 2026 should be able to explain the distinction.
noon is straightforward, and its seller help centre is specific about stills. The requirements that affect a product shoot:

Nothing in that list asks for a spin. If noon is your main channel, spend the budget on compliant stills and secondary images first.
Shopify is where a spin earns its money. Shopify’s own product media types are images, video and 3D models, so a drag-to-rotate spin is delivered either through an app or as an embedded viewer in the product template. Two Shopify specs are worth writing into the brief: the Help Centre notes that square product images generally display best at 2048 × 2048 px, and that image zoom requires files larger than 800 × 800 px. Shoot and deliver the spin frames at a size that clears the zoom threshold comfortably, because a spin without zoom loses most of its point.
Your own site, on any platform you control, has no rules at all. That is the argument for putting the spin there and treating the marketplaces as a separate, stills-first deliverable.
Name your primary sales channel in the brief. It changes what we shoot, and how we deliver it.
Which products win with a spin, and which do not
The rule of thumb: 360 pays off when rotation reveals something a flat photo hides. It is wasted on flat objects and on anything where fit matters more than form.
Worth spinning: jewellery and watches, where the buyer wants the clasp, the case back and the setting from behind. Electronics, because rear ports and connections are genuine pre-sale questions. Footwear, where the sole and heel profile sell. Bags, for hardware and strap attachment. Furniture, where the back panel decides whether the piece can float in a room.
Not worth spinning: flat products such as books and posters, where one extra still covers the only other side. Garments on a mannequin, since the shopper’s real question is fit on a body and an on-model or ghost-mannequin set answers it better. Low-price commodity items, where the per-SKU production cost never comes back.
The decision path we use on the phone: does the product have a functional rear or underside buyers ask about? If no, one extra still beats a spin. If yes, is the surface mirror-finish or transparent? If yes, price a render alongside the shoot. If no, does the detail justify zoom? If yes, shoot 72 frames; if no, 36 and move on.

What a 50-SKU spin day looks like
«We shoot 360» tells you nothing about throughput, so here is the real shape of a day.
The rig gets built once, and that is 60 to 90 minutes: table levelled, camera locked and tethered, lights balanced, a test rotation shot and reviewed at full size on a monitor. We do not start SKU one until the test spin plays back clean, because a lighting fault found at SKU 30 means 30 reshoots.
After that it rolls. A simple 36-frame product, a cosmetics jar or a sneaker, takes 12 to 18 minutes on the table including placement, centring, a test frame and the rotation. A jewellery piece at 72 frames with prop support and a dust check between angles runs 40 to 60 minutes. Fifty simple SKUs fit in one shooting day. Fifty rings do not, and anyone promising that is planning to cut frames.
Where series break, in the order I see it: the product creeps off the rotation axis, autofocus was left on, someone bumps a light stand between SKU 14 and SKU 15, dust invisible at 0° catches a specular at 190°. Reviewing the test rotation at 100% before the day starts catches all four.
Post runs behind the shoot. For 50 standard SKUs, expect frames back within 5 to 7 working days including a review round, with a 48-hour rush on small batches at a 20% premium. Large sets cannot genuinely be rushed, because masking time is masking time.

Four questions expose most of the price gap. How many frames, and is that per product or per row? Is background removal included on every frame or only on keyframes? Do you deliver the viewer or only the raw JPEGs? If it is only frames, who builds the embed?
