Jewellery photography on a model in Dubai: hands, necklines, casting and cost

On-model jewellery in Dubai is quoted as a production day, not per image. Our photography day with a full lighting build runs AED 4,000 to 7,000 or more, and the model side sits on top of that: reported Dubai talent bands of AED 1,000 to 5,000 per person per eight-hour day, agency commission of roughly 20 percent, hair and make-up at AED 800 to 1,800, and usage rights priced separately from the day rate. An agency commercial face booked at AED 3,000 reaches about AED 6,600 before the first frame is taken.

I shoot this work in Dubai as Chief Photographer, for retail catalogues and campaign heroes. Most briefs that land with the words «jewelry model photography» in them are really asking two separate questions: what do I get for a day, and why is it so much more than the same pieces on a white sweep. The short answer is that a hand has a pulse and a ring does not. Everything below follows from that.

Why on-model jewellery is a different shoot from still life

The technique that makes still-life jewellery possible stops working the moment a person holds the piece. On a tabletop I build depth by focus stacking: a ring gets 10 to 20 frames, each focused one slice deeper, merged so only the sharp part of each survives. On a living hand that merge fails. At 100mm macro the micro-tremor of a pulse shifts the subject between frames, and nothing registers.

So depth has to come from aperture and light power instead. That means more flash into a smaller hole, shorter flash duration to freeze the tremor, and a beauty light that flatters skin while still putting a clean specular highlight on polished metal. Those two jobs pull in opposite directions. Skin wants soft and wrapped. Gold wants hard and directional. Reconciling them is most of what you pay a jewellery photographer for on an on-model day.

Still life On a model
Depth of field Focus stacking, f/8 to f/14 Single frame, lit for aperture
Pieces per full day 15 to 25 catalogue, 4 to 5 hero Far fewer, every piece relit around skin
What competes with the piece Background and reflections Skin, hair, fabric, nails
Fixable later Dust, seams, minor highlights Very little; retouch cost climbs
What you are selling The object Scale, proportion, wearability

If your output is an e-commerce grid, this is the wrong shoot. Our still-life jewellery photography guide covers that side, and it costs a fraction of this one.

Casting for a jewellery shoot in Dubai: how it works and how long it takes

Plan two to three weeks from brief to shoot day. The clock runs: brief to agencies, options back from them, your shortlist, holds placed on talent, confirmation, then paperwork and permits.

Dubai runs three different casting setups, and each sits on its own risk profile. A roster agency represents and manages talent directly, which is what the commission actually buys: if someone drops out, the agency owns the problem and finds a replacement. Allure Agency, in Business Bay’s Churchill Tower, specialises in Arab, Emirati and Arabic-speaking talent, useful when a campaign has to read as regional rather than generic. Michelle Hay Management runs a smaller, curated roster in the same category. A casting platform instead lists a large self-registered pool and connects you directly, so you get more options faster but carry more of the attendance risk yourself; MMG Talents and Yallacast both work this way, with MMG’s database running across the UAE and the wider Gulf. The full landscape, plus how options and holds work, sits in our casting agencies guide.

Agencies here do not publish commission structures. Ask for the fee split in writing before you option anyone. The band most often quoted to us is around 20 percent on top of the day rate, and it applies to the usage uplift too, which surprises people when the invoice arrives.

Two pieces of paperwork catch brands out. For an international model, the agency carries responsibility for the correct work permit and visa, not you and not us; MOHRE expanded its permit framework to 13 categories in mid-2026 with processing reported at one to five business days, but that is the agency’s lane and it should be confirmed by them in writing. Second, if any part of the shoot leaves a private studio, a Dubai Film and TV Commission permit is reported at AED 520 with a review window of three to five working days, longer for sensitive locations. Verify the current position with DFTC rather than trusting a blog, ours included.

Rates by tier and the full casting timeline sit in our model casting cost and timeline breakdown.

Hand models: nails, skin and what actually gets rejected

Hand casting is a separate process from face casting, and treating it as a bonus feature of a face booking is the most common way a jewellery day goes sideways.

What I look at in a hand option:

  • Finger taper and length relative to the pieces. A size 7 sample ring on a size 9 finger will not seat, and a ring that does not seat reads as borrowed.
  • Nail bed shape and length. Short, clean, neutral. Gel ridges catch a hard key light and show as texture on a pale nail.
  • Cuticle and skin condition. Dryness invisible in a phone-lit casting photo becomes a landscape under a specular beauty light.
  • Vein prominence and tendon definition when the hand relaxes. Both change by the hour and with room temperature.
  • Scars, tan lines and watch marks on the wrist, which decide whether bracelets are even possible.
  • Repeatability. The skill in hand modelling is holding a position for thirty frames without drift, not having pretty hands.

Rejections almost always happen at the same point: the hand was approved from a casting image shot in soft window light, and the first tethered frame on set shows everything the window hid. That is not a post problem. Advanced retouching runs AED 150 to 250 per image at our rates, so a weak hand never gets fixed later. You pay for it later, per image, forever.

Hand-only talent generally sits at the lower end of the AED 1,000 to 5,000 reported band, which makes a dedicated hand model one of the cheapest risk reductions available on a jewellery day. A manicurist on set is a separate booking and worth making. Before any casting goes out, send us the ring sizes of the actual sample pieces. That single line in a brief saves more shoot time than any other.

Styling around the piece: necklines, wrists, fingers

The piece decides the wardrobe, not the other way round. Brands send a mood board of clothing and then discover the clothing has eaten the product.

Necklaces live or die on the neckline. A high collar swallows a short chain. A wide boat neck leaves a pendant floating with no edge to frame it. A scoop that sits two fingers below the collarbone gives a pendant somewhere to belong and gives me a fabric line to use as a graphic anchor. Hair goes off the collarbone or you will be retouching strands out from under the chain on every frame.

Earrings need the ear fully exposed and both ears presentable, because you will shoot both sides. For bracelets the wrist has to be doing something, a bend or a slight rotation, or the piece slides down the arm and sits where nobody wears it. Rings have a narrow set of hand positions that read expensive: relaxed fingers, a little overlap, no claw, no tension in the knuckles.

Put this on the model’s call sheet. No shimmer body lotion, which turns every soft source into a field of random speculars. And no moisturiser applied in the thirty minutes before a hand goes in frame.

One Dubai-specific item that belongs in the production plan rather than the styling notes: who carries the pieces. High-value jewellery arrives with the brand’s own custodian more often than not, and a piece-by-piece sign-in and sign-out sheet at the studio door protects everyone. Build that into the schedule, because it takes real minutes at both ends of the day.

What jewelry model photography costs in Dubai, line by line

There is no honest per-image price for an on-model jewellery shoot. Talent fees, agency commission, make-up and usage rights do not divide by the number of frames, so a per-image quote either hides them or overcharges you on volume. Still life divides cleanly, which is why our jewellery photography cost guide quotes AED 120 to 150 per image for white-background catalogue work and AED 300 to 550 for luxury macro heroes. On a model, you buy a day.

Line Amount Whose number
Studio day, full lighting build, crew AED 4,000 to 7,000+ Our rate
Advanced retouching AED 150 to 250 per image Our rate
48-hour rush on delivery about +20% Our rate
Talent, per person, 8-hour day AED 1,000 to 5,000 Reported Dubai market band
Agency commercial face, from about AED 3,000 Reported Dubai market band
New face AED 1,000 to 2,000 Reported Dubai market band
Established name AED 5,000 and up Reported Dubai market band
Agency commission about 20% Reported, not published by agencies
Hair and make-up, commercial day AED 800 to 1,800 Reported Dubai market band
Usage uplift, wider than UAE 12 months 1.5x to 3x the day rate Reported Dubai market band
DFTC permit, if you leave the studio AED 520, 3 to 5 working days Reported, verify with DFTC

Here is the arithmetic brands never see until invoice day, using an agency commercial face at AED 3,000 and UAE-only usage for twelve months:

  1. Day rate: AED 3,000
  2. UAE usage uplift at 1.5x: plus AED 1,500, running total AED 4,500
  3. Agency commission at 20 percent on that: plus AED 900, running total AED 5,400
  4. Hair and make-up at AED 1,200: total AED 6,600

Add our shoot day and a day of on-model jewellery with one agency face and UAE usage lands somewhere around AED 10,600 to 13,600 before retouching volume. That total is arithmetic from the rows above, not a price list; your actual quote comes as one number once we see the piece list and the usage scope. We cover both halves in house, so the talent side and the production side arrive on one invoice instead of two.

Usage rights: the part that moves the budget most

Usage is the line most likely to double your talent cost, and the one most briefs leave blank. What you are buying is territory, channels and duration. Our default assumption when we write a jewellery brief is UAE, owned channels, twelve months. Everything beyond that is priced as a multiple of the day rate, reported at around 1.5x for wider regional use and 2x to 3x once broadcast, out-of-home or global digital enters the scope. Renewal after expiry is reported at AED 1,500 to 4,000, and it is negotiated from a weaker position than the original booking, because by then the image is already working for you.

Jewellery brands get hit harder here than most. A fashion campaign dies with the season. A diamond solitaire hero image is still the best asset on the site three years later, because the collection has not changed. That mismatch is where the money leaks: the image you want to keep forever is tied to a person whose permission expires.

The way out is to buy duration up front, when you have options and the agency wants the booking. And to be clear-eyed about which images need a person at all, because the hero frame you own outright, with no expiry and no renewal conversation, is the still-life one.

Briefing the shoot: lighting, shot list, how many frames you get

Lighting is a build, not a preset, and it cannot be added at the end of the day. Switching from a soft wrap for skin to a hard specular key for metal is a 30 to 40 minute reset of the whole set, which is why I group pieces by material and by light rather than by collection. Gold, silver, gemstones and pearls each want a different approach. A brief that lists pieces in SKU order and a brief that lists them by material produce a different number of finished images from the same eight hours.

What I want in a brief before quoting:

  • Piece list with materials and actual ring sizes of the samples
  • Which pieces are hero and which are range, decided before shoot day
  • Neckline and wardrobe direction, or permission to decide it
  • Crops needed: vertical social, square, wide web banner
  • Usage scope: territory, channels, duration
  • Retouch level per piece group
  • Delivery date, and whether anything is going into a paid campaign

On output, a full photo production day at our studio lands in the 35 to 60 finished image band, a half day 15 to 25, and on-model jewellery sits near the floor of both because every piece gets relit around a person. Selects go out two to three working days after the shoot. We shoot tethered to a calibrated monitor so the brand approves highlight placement on set, where it can still be changed, rather than arguing about a compressed preview two days later.

Shoot hero pieces first. The manicure is perfect at 10am and the hand is tired by four, and no retoucher will give you back the first hour.

When still life is enough

Catalogue and e-commerce grid work, dimension-accurate product detail pages, anything where the buyer needs to see the object rather than the life around it: that is a still-life day, and a cheaper one. Book on-model when you are selling scale, proportion and the feeling of wearing the piece, which is campaign and social territory. For unlimited colourways off an approved master, CGI beats both, and our CGI production team handles that from the same approved reference.

Send us a piece list and the usage scope you need and you get a quote back in about 15 minutes: WhatsApp +971 56 839 9199. The jewellery work itself sits on our jewellery production page, and the wider stills service on photo production.

FAQ

How much does a hand model cost in Dubai?
Hand-only talent generally sits at the lower end of the reported Dubai band of AED 1,000 to 5,000 per person for an eight-hour day. Add agency commission of roughly 20 percent on top, plus usage rights priced separately from the day rate. A manicurist on set is a separate booking.

Do I need a separate hand model, or can the face model do the hands?
Sometimes the face model’s hands are fine, and you only know that from a hand-specific option, not from her book. Hands are cast on nail bed shape, finger size against your actual sample rings, skin condition under hard light and the ability to hold a position across thirty frames. Given that a dedicated hand model sits at the bottom of the talent band and advanced retouching runs AED 150 to 250 per image, casting hands separately is usually the cheaper decision.

What are usage rights, and why do they cost so much?
Usage rights are permission to show a person’s image in defined territories and channels for a defined period. The baseline we write is UAE, owned channels, twelve months. Broader scope is priced as a multiple of the day rate, reported at around 1.5x regionally and 2x to 3x for broadcast, out-of-home or global digital. Renewal after expiry is reported at AED 1,500 to 4,000. Jewellery images outlive campaign cycles, so buy duration at booking rather than at renewal.

How long is a shoot day and how many images do I get?
A full day is eight hours on set. Our full photo production day lands in the 35 to 60 finished image band and a half day 15 to 25, with on-model jewellery near the floor of both, because each piece is relit around skin. Selects arrive two to three working days after the shoot; a 48-hour rush adds about 20 percent.

Can I book a model directly, or only through an agency?
Both happen in Dubai. Direct is cheaper and you carry the risk: attendance, releases and, for an international model, the work permit. With a roster agency such as Allure Agency or Michelle Hay Management, the permit and visa responsibility sits with them and you have a company to call if the talent does not arrive. On high-value jewellery with a brand custodian on set and a one-day window, we recommend the agency route.
